Adrenalized: Life, Def Leppard, and Beyond Hardcover – October 27, 2015
Meet Phil Collen. You may know him as the lead guitarist in Def Leppard, whose signature song “Pour Some Sugar on Me” is still as widely enjoyed as when it debuted in 1988. Maybe you’ve heard of him as the rock star who gave up alcohol and meat more than twenty-five years ago. Most likely you’ve seen him shirtless—in photos or in real life—flaunting his impeccably toned body to appreciative female fans.
But it wasn’t always like this. Collen worked his way up from nothing, teaching himself guitar from scratch as a teenager by imitating his heroes. He slogged it out in London-based pub bands for years, long before Def Leppard formed and transformed from unknowns to icons (all thanks to a little album called Pyromania), from playing openers in near-empty arenas to headlining in those same stadiums and selling them out every night. But as Collen discovered, true overnight success is a myth. Like the other band members, he had to struggle and fight his way to the top; in the end, he says, “our work ethic saved us.” Just as it still does.
This is Collen’s story, starting with his first real taste of success and wild rock and roll excess as a member of the seminal glam rock outfit Girl. But once he joins Def Leppard, it’s also an amazing underdog tale featuring a bunch of ordinary working-class lads who rose to mega-stardom, overcoming incredible obstacles—such as drummer Rick Allen losing an arm in a car crash and the tragic death of guitarist Steve Clark, Phil’s musical soul mate, who lost his fight with alcoholism. Featuring personal, never-before-seen photos of Collen and his band mates on stage and off, Adrenalized is a fascinating account of the failures, triumphs, challenges, and rock-hard dedication it takes to make dreams come true.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2015I liked this book, would have liked to have seen some never published DL photos but it was a good book nonetheless. What I liked most was Phil's honesty. I compared his accounts to that of an ex-girlfriend of Steve Clark. Unlike the ex, who used and still uses Steve Clark as promotion for her book and anything else she does. Phil spoke very honestly and from the heart in regards to Steve, as a person, a friend, and about his alcoholism. He also spoke candidly about his own drinking issues and stated that a lot of things that happened back then, he could not remember because he was seriously drunk. Unlike the ex-he did not have detailed recall on events that occurred thirty or so years ago, and under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both. And he did clear up what some of us believed to be one of her biggest lies in the book; that she did not know who DL was. Phil stated that at a Christmas party he attended with Mensch, they met and during a discussion, she told Phil that she and her friend lived in Paris, Phil told her that he and Steve would be spending time there and she suggested they call her when they arrived, she and her friend would show them around. In her version, the only part that's true was that she was a friend of Mensch. Not because Mensch called her and had to plead with her to show them around Paris. Up to this point in her book, she already portrayed herself as a floozy (average-nothing special "model") who bedded musicians. Phil admitted to a lot of stuff he did remember, had a lot of women, several broken marriages and kids from at least a couple or so. I am glad he didn't detail some of the exploits by other band members, out of respect. If they want to air their dirty laundry, that's their business, and I respect that. I recommend this book. It is not a fabricated fairytale of more fiction than fact by some ex, who was dumped roughly 2 years before Steve passed. It was a sad tragedy for Steve, and Phil didn't exploit his friend to sell books.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2021I've been a big Def Leppard fans for years now. I already have the official band biography 'Animal Instinct' and thought this Phil Collen biography would make a nice companion piece to that. Also it was actually written with Phil Collen, so that was a plus. There's plenty of stories about him growing up in London and his parents. Who, by they way, were very supportive, awesome parents. Then there's all the stories about Phil working his way up through the music scene. The various bands he was in as well as personal details about his life and of course some stories about his time in Def Leppard.
I was somewhat dreading the whole Steve Clark tragedy being discussed in here. But it was approached with just enough information and sensitivity without getting too deep and depressing. It does tend to jump back and forth through the time line, now and then. But even so I found it hard to put it down once I started reading. All in all, I found this an excellent book for anyone wanting to know more about this awesome guitar player.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2015The most disappointing thing about this book is the size. Quite short - lacking some real detail at times. Phil could've gone into a little more depth about his motivation for becoming vegetarian (now vegan) and other things like that. It's good read - a real page-turner - but not a poetic read by any stretch... If your a Leppard/Collen fan - you'll love it, no doubt.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2015Really appreciate the author's honesty. Great to relive the 80s and the rise of one of the great rock bands in history. Phil has an interesting outlook on life. You can tell that he's met a lot of people. Sometimes difficult to keep track of all the relationships, but otherwise a very entertaining read. Phil seems like a great guy; very philosophical.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2015As a huge fan of Def Leppard and as someone who ogles Phil as the beautiful piece of man meat that he is, I LOVED the book.
In particular, I enjoyed reading about his transformation from wild rock musician in Girl through his decision to stop drinking to his decision to become vegan. He talked about how he felt about his parents' divorce and how they supported him and his dream to become a mucisian. He spoke very eloquently about Steve Clark and his untimely death.
He also writes about some of the things in his life that he regrets and some of the things he should regret but doesn't as he used them as a lesson. Anyone humble enough to admit this deserves my admiration.
A small part of me feared that when Phil writes about being vegan he would lecture or scold those of us who are not. Not once did he allude that meat eaters as heathens who exercise their power over animals. Be simply stated why he became vegan and left it at that. For that, I love Phil even more.
Now, if only we could get Joe Elliot to write his memoir.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great
As a die hard Def Leppard fan this book was a must. It was funny to read about all of Phil's goings on before he joined Def Leppard and during the Hysteria era. He talked a lot about the death of Steve Clark and that was heart breaking to read. A lot of us fans knew he had problems but not on the level that he actually was at. If your a Def Leppard fan this is a must read.

I loved this book entirely. I honestly hated how little Rick Savage was mentioned. Not a single picture with him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uma biografia sensacional
